The Scientific Process Flashcards
Explain the 6 step process of coming up with a hypothesis and testing it
- Scientists observe something they don’t understand e.g. a person suffering from an illness
- They some up with a possible explanation for it- a HYPOTHESIS
- They make a PREDICTION for an investigation- a statement based on the hypothesis that can be tested
- They carry out said investigation
- The data will either support, disprove, or not affect the hypothesis - this affects what the scientist will do with their hypothesis next
Give 2 examples of types of investigation
- Lab experiments
2. Studies
What 2 things happen AFTER the scientist has done their initial test on their hypothesis, and found data to support it?
Other scientists will use the hypothesis to make their own predictions, and carry out their own experiments or studies.
They’ll also try to reproduce the original investigation to check the results
What makes a hypothesis begin to be agreed as true?
Having all of the tests on the hypothesis support it
What happens when some scientists get reproducible results of a test that does not support the hypothesis?
Scientists have to come up with a new hypothesis- perhaps a MODIFICATION of the original, or maybe a completely NEW one
What happens with a hypothesis that is widely regarded as fact?
It is written in books and taught to students
What are accepted hypothesis often referred to as?
Theories
What are hypothesis never definitely?
FACT
