The Scientific Methods Flashcards
What is the experimental method
a series of steps that scientists worldwide use to identify and answer questions
What is step one of the experimental method
observing- a piece of information we gather using our senses—our sight, hearing, smell, and touch
What is step two of the experimental method
hypothesis- a testable idea or explanation that leads to a scientific investigation
What is step three of the experimental method
prediction- a logical statement about what will happen if the hypothesis is supported
What is step four of the experimental method
experimenting- a procedure designed to test a hypothesis under controlled conditions
What is step five of the experimental method
organizing and analyzing Data- Organizing data into tables and graphic illustrations
What is step six of the experimental method
drawing conclusions- determine the results of their experiment by analyzing their data and comparing the outcome of their experiment with their prediction
What is step seven of the experimental method
repeat experiment- repeating experiments so scientists can have a clear and precise answer
What is step eight of the experimental method
communicating results- sharing results with other scientists
The Correlation Method
comparing the data between one or more events
Scientific Habits of Mind
the way scientists approach and think about questions
Curiosity
building a strong desire to learn about something
The Habit of Skepticism
not believing in anything you are told till proven with a logical explanation
Openness to New Ideas
keeping an open mind about how the world works
Intellectual Honesty
considering the possibility that the new results may be accurate, even if this means that the hypothesis might be wrong
