The Scientific Method Flashcards
Hypothesis
an idea about how something works; a proposed explanation
Testable
It must be possible to evaluate the hypothesis by observing/measuring something
Falsifiable
There must be some observation or set of observations that prove it false
Scientific Hypothesis
An idea about how something works; a proposed explanation
Scientific Fact
A well-supported hypothesis
Scientific Theory
An explanation for a set of related observations that is based on well-supported hypotheses from several, independent lines of research
Inductive reasoning
When specific observations are used to derive a general principle
Deductive reasoning
When a general principle is used to predict specific observations
Alternative Hypothesis
Different hypotheses that lead to the same set or pattern of observations
Experiment
A hypothesis test
Manipulative Experiment
Scientist imposes some external manipulation
Observational Experiment
Comparing or describing things that already exist
Data
Information collected during an experiment
Variables
The factors in an experiment that can change
Independent variable
Variable scientists manipulate (or choose to compare if observational)
