The Science of Biology Flashcards
What are the steps of the scientific method?
- Make an observation.
- Ask a question.
- Form a hypothesis, or testable explanation.
- Make a prediction based on the hypothesis.
- Test the prediction.
- Iterate: use the results to make new hypotheses or predictions.
What is a variable?
The factor that is different between the control and experimental groups is known as the independent variable.
In contrast, the dependent variable in an experiment is the response that’s measured to see if the treatment had an effect.
What is a control group?
The group that receives the treatment in an experiment is called the experimental group, while the group that does not receive the treatment is called the control group. The control group provides a baseline that lets us see if the treatment has an effect.
What are the 5 characteristics of living things?
All organisms…
- Respond to stimuli
- Are organized
- Grow and develop
- Use energy
- Reproduce
What are the parts of a compound microscope?
- The eyepiece
- The carrying arm
- The objective lenses
- The stage
- Stage clips
- Stage Controls
- Coarse focus
- Fine focus
- Condenser adjustment
- Diaphragm
How is total magnification determined of a compound microscope?
Magnification of eyepiece • Magnification of objective lens
Resolution vs Magnification
What is the difference?
We don’t need that
