The Salivary Glands Flashcards
Name and describe the anatomical arrangement, relations, blood supply and innervation of the salivary glands
What are the two types of salivary glands?
Intrinsic and extrinsic
What are the names of the three pairs of extrinsic salivary glands?
Sublingual, submandibular, parotid
Gives three examples of intrinsic salivary glands (name and location)
Lingual glands (in the tongue), labial glands (on the inside of the lips), buccal glands (on the inside of the cheeks)
Which two arteries supply the sublingual gland?
Sublingual and submental arteries
Name six structures which run through the parotid gland
Facial nerve, external carotid artery (terminal branches are maxillary artery and superficial temporal artery), retromandibular vein (formed from the maxillary vein and superficial temporal vein)
Which nerve provides parasympathetic innervation to the parotid gland?
Glossopharyngeal (CN IX)
Which arteries supply the submandibular gland?
Submental arteries
