He promised greater freedom of speech and the formation of Parliament (Duma) to work towards reform.

Proved disastrous as Russia was no match for Germany and the Russian causalities were greater than any nation in any previous war ever. Huge food shortages, economy weakened.
Why did the Tsar leave the capital of Petrograd in 1915?
To take command of the Russian Army front.
Why was the Tsar blamed for every defeat?
He was a poor military leader.
Who did the Tsar leave in charge of the country in 1915?
His wife Alexandria (the Tsarina).
Why did the people dislike Alexandria?
She was German-born and seemed to be under the control of the equally unpopular Grigori Rasputin.

The soldiers began to mutiny in their thousands.
Why did the Russian soldiers start to mutiny in 1915 during the war?
They had little food, no ammunition or even proper uniforms.
When and what was the first Revolution?
The February Revolution began on February 23rd 1917.
Who was involved in the February Revolution?
Demonstrators, supported by crowds of striking industrial workers and later joined by many women.
Why did the February Revolution happen?
Many people were desperate for bread and wanted to end the food rationing. Also people were demanding a replacement for the Tsar and an end in Russia’s role in the war.
What did the army do during the February Revolution?
They were forced to end the riots by force, but they refused.
What did the Tsar do on the 2nd of March 1917? Then what did his brother do after the Tsar’s decision?
He abdicated (gave up) the throne for himself and his son. His brother refused to succeed the throne, ending centuries of Russian royal rule?
