What is common law? (
A tradition meaning that legal principles are derived from previous court decisions and legal precedents.
What is meant by legislation? (1)
Are laws.
What are statutes? (1)
Statutes are acts of parliament and are the highest form of law in the uk. Can also override common law principles.
What is the function of the county court? (2)
Deals with cases of lesser value and importance, deal with a wide range of cases including contract disputes,personal injury and family law cases.
What is the function of the crown court? (2)
Deals with much more serious cases such as murder and other offences of this nature.
Contains a judge and jury and are where trials take place.
What is the function of the high court? (2)
Area superior court and has both civil and criminal jurisdiction.
Handles complex and high value cases, serves as a court of first instance.
What is the function of the court of appeal? (2)
Hears appeals from lower courts and decides on points of law.
Divided into two divisions, criminal division and civil division.
What is the function of the Supreme Court? (2)
The highest court of appeal and deals with cases of great public importance.
Replaced the House of Lords in 2009.
What are solicitors? (1)
Provide legal advice and daft legal documents along with representing clients in various legal matters.
What are barristers? (1)
Are specialist legal advocates who represent clients in court and give legal opinions along with providing specialist advice.
