Naval warfare in the late 1700s
A
Ships: Wooden and dependent on sails, had 70+ guns
Frigates: Smaller, faster ships with 28-36 guns - used in continual action, patrolling and scouting.

Blockade
A
Used by navy to prevent enemy ships from leaving port
- close blockade : main fleet sailed near to enemy port
- open blockade : main fleet in home port or miles away at sea and frigates patrolled the coast off the enemy port

Recruitment
A
Impressment: Seafarers 15-55 would be forced to join the navy
Quota system: Each county was required to supply a certain number of volunteers based on population and number of ports

Conditions
A
- pay: in 1793 22s. 6d, wages remained stagnant since 1652
- sailors only allowed 35cm to sleep in hammocks
