The romantics liked folk lore not high art…. elaborate
The romantics liked the idea of their art being spontaneous, natural and for everyone. They rebelled against the poetry that they had grown up with which was hard to read and aimed at scholar and aristocrats.
The romantics used folk stories, ballads and popular songs and began to use simpler and more ordinary language in their poems.
The romantics like Shakespeare not classical drama… elaborate
Romantics were deeply inspired by Shakespeare as the saw him as a rebel. When Shakespeare became better known critics looked down on him because his plays weren’t classical enough and broke the rules.
Critics didn’t like the fact that he mixed comedy and tragedy or mixed great rulers with ordinary citizens and that he used several plots and sub-plots
