The role of Climate in the distribution of Biomes Flashcards
Why does temperature decrease with latitude
The equator receives the most heat from the Sun because the Sun is directly overhead and therefore its rays are most intense here. Further away from the equator, temperatures decrease.
Why is there so much rain in the tropical rain forests found at the equator
The high surface temperatures at the equator all year round, power a convection cell of rising air. As this air rises it cools, the moisture it contains condenses and a lot of rain falls, as seen in the tropical rainforests.
Why are desserts found not on the equator but near it
The cooled air falls over the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, which creates high pressure zones of clear skies. As the air falls, it warms. This means that temperatures are high but precipitation is low here, giving reason for the location of deserts in these areas
What is responsible for the seasons
The tilt of the earth on its axis
What area is least impacted by seasons
the equator
In june, what way does the equator shift
northwards
Why does the ITCZ shift north in June
to follow the overhead sun
Where does this bring a wet season to
The tropical grasslands of the northern hemisphere
