The Rock Cycle Flashcards
Where does the rock cycle begin?
Extrusive igneous rocks being weathered overtime and being carried by forces of nature to bodies of water where they become sediment
Why aren’t fossils found in igneous rocks?
The intense heat that igneous rocks are subjected to would melt any fossils. Plus there are no organisms that live in volcanoes who could fossilize
How can sedimentary rock be transformed into metamorphic rock?
Burial, high temperature and pressure
How can sedimentary rock become igneous rock?
After sedimentary rock is buried and exposed to high temperature and pressure, it melts to form magma. This magma may crystallize below the Earth’s surface to form intrusive igneous rock or erupt and form extrusive igneous rock
Why do extrusive igneous rocks have larger crystals than intrusive igneous rocks?
Extrusive igneous rocks take longer to cool
