The article in the Wiemar Constitution that allowed the president to suspend the Reichstag in an emergency and rule by decree.
When and why was Article 48 used?
In March 1930 President Hindenburg appointed a new chancellor Heinrich Brüning. When Brüning’s plans to cut government spending were rejected by the Reichstag he convinced Hindenburg to use the emergency presidential powers available from Article 48 to force it through. When the Reichstag protested this, Brüning had Hindenburg use his powers once again to dissolve the parliament. To replace them a general election was held.
