What did the Nazis stand for
Abolish treaty of Versailles. Re-arm Germany. Destroy communism. Hebensraum - rule German emperor. Greater Germany - unite all German-speaking people. Remove Jews. Strong central government. Destroy Weimar Republic.
Why were the Nazis popular - CITIZENS
War guilt cause.
Unfair terms.
Humiliation + war reparation.
Germans not happy - blamed for WW1.

Win over army.
Didn’t believe they were defeated.
Government “stabbed Germany in the back”.

Hitler set up the: SS, Hitler Youth, German Girls’ league + Nazi teachers/students.

Males - 14-18, younger boys - 10-14.
Girls section.
100,000 - 8million.
Why was Hitler Youth (1922-1945) set up
To encourage loyalty of young people to the Nazis’ (brainwash kids).
The SA

They interrupted Communist meetings.
The SS

Became No.1 violent wing of the Nazis in 1934.

In October 1929, the US stock market crashed and a global recession began.
Homeless men used their money to sleep “on the line”.
They wanted to look as presentable as possible.

Economic Crisis
1) loss of faith in Germany - angry with the government, looking for someone.
2) Germans were desperate + supported extremist parties + ideas.

1932 - 200 seats
Fear of Communism
This frightened the ordinary Germans, especially rich business men + farmers. The Nazis (SS+SA) were able to deal with the threat of communists.
Propaganda
Goebbels produced effective posters + rallies that made people believe that Hitler was saviour. Hitler himself had huge charisma + was a wonderful public speaker.
Hindenburg’s mistake
Hindenburg needed the Nazis (SS+SA) able to deal with threat of communists. He invited Hitler to became chancellor thinking he could control him. He made use of Hitler’s popularity to get support for government. Hitler became chancellor in 1933. Thus - gave Hitler opportunity to take control of govt + became dictator.
