The Revolt of the Northern Earls Flashcards

Q
What were the reasons for the revolt?
A
- The Duke of Norfolk, a leading Catholic nobel planned to marry Mary.
- Norfolk wanted to increase the influence of Catholics at court. He objected to William Cecil’s power being Elizabeths chief minister as he was Protestant.
- Some northern nobel like Westmoreland and Northumberland also wanted more power in the North and at Court.
- They wanted to restore Catholicism.
- Even if Elizabeth was not removed they hoped Mary would be named as her successor.

Q
Why did the revolt of the Northern Earls fail?
A
- They expected help from Spain but they received no support.
- They expected many Catholics to join the revolt, but she was popular so there was no widespread desire to remove her; this lack of support meant they were no match for the 100,000 men force Elizabeth sent to defeat them (showed the support she had).
