restore the catholic faith.

What happened in the revolt?
Earls ordered people to join their armies.
marched south to restore the Catholic faith.
In Durham they stormed into a cathedral, destroyed many items
Yet many catholic nobles stayed loyal to Elizabeth, refusing to join them.
Returned north after the Earl of Sussex had assembled a huge army.
Mary was moved to a prison further south, preventing any rescue.
A port was captured, hoping spanish troops would land them and give them support, yet never happened.
The royal army reached them and caused them to flee, Northumberland was beheaded, 450 rebels killed and Westmorland escaped abroad.
Why did the revolt fail?
Elizabeth’s government was calm.
No support from abroad ever arrived.
Catholic nobility never joined the revolt, failing completely.
Indecisive leaders, not sure if to overthrow Elizabeth or free Mary and name her as Elizabeth’s heir.

Why was the revolt a threat?
If they succeeded Elizabeth could have been taken off the throne.
Significant amount of rebels followed them.
More support given to Mary by Catholics, who saw her as legitimate and wanted her on the throne.
