The Revolt Of The Northearn Earls 1569-70 Flashcards

Northern nobility remained Catholic- didn’t like the religious settlement
Found their influence reduced under Elizabeth as Elizabeth created favourites like Dudley and Cecil
The North were geographically far away from London therefore they had some independence from the government in the south
Causes of the revolt of the Northern Earls ( Mary Queen of Scots )
Many northern Lords saw Mary Queen of Scots as a promising alternative to Elizabeth for a number of reasons: they were unhappy with Elizabeth’s religious settlement and they believed that Mary, a devout Catholic, would allow them to worship freely again as Catholics.
Mary was being imprisoned in the North at the time.
Who are the Northern Earls?
Thomas Howard - Duke of Norfolk
Thomas Percy - Earl of Northumberland
Charles Neville - Earl of Westmorland
(All senior Earls that lost power under Elizabeth)

What was the plan for the revolt of the Northern Earls?
Earls of Northumberland and Westmorland would raise an army and take control of Durham and would then march south to join the Duke of Norfolk’s forces
Several thousand Spanish troops would land in Hartlepool to support the rebels
Mary Queen of Scots would be freed, married to the Duke Norfolk and placed on the throne
What was the revolt of the Northern earls also known as ?
The Northern Rebellion
Risks with the plan
It was commiting treason in many different ways:
Nobility had to ask Elizabeth to get married
It was Elizabeth responsibility to choose the next monarch
For the earls to be plotting with Spain was treason
Main events of the Northern Rebellion
The Earls took control of Durham and celebrated a catholic mass
They moved south however the supporting troops that were supposed to come from spain never arrived
The revolt was crushed and the Earls and 450 rebels were executed
The Duke of Norfolk who was Elizabeth’s cousin was spared
Outcomes of the Northern rebellion
The Earls in the North were beheaded and replaced by Protestants who were loyal to Elizabeth. This therefore increased her power in the North.
Mary was still in England
Elizabeth looked weak as she did not execute the Duke of Norfolk and Mary
