The tréma does not change the pronunciation of the letter it sits on but indicates that it should be pronounced as a separate sound from the previous one. In the case of ‘guë’ it indicates that the ‘u’ should be pronounced too. For example, in the word vague, the letters gue are pronounced /g/:
