The respiratory system - the ribs Flashcards
How many ribs are there and what do they form?
The ribs are a set of twelve bones which form the protective ‘cage’ of the thorax.
What are the ribs attached to?
They articulate with the vertebral column posteriorly and terminate anteriorly as cartilage (known as costal cartilage).
What is the role of ribs?
As part of the bony thorax, the ribs protect the internal thoracic organs. They also have a role in breathing – during chest expansion the ribcage moves to permit lung inflation.

What are the two classifications of ribs?
Typical and Atypical
What are the typical ribs?
3,4,5,6,7,8,9 are typical ribs
What are the atypical ribs?
Why are they called this?
Ribs 1, 2, 10 11 and 12 can be described as ‘atypical.’ This is because they are flatter and wider.
What are the true ribs and what are they?
True ribs – attach directly to sternum
1-7
What are the false ribs and what are they?
False ribs – attach to the 7th costal cartilage
8-10
What are the floating ribs and what are they?
Floating ribs – no anterior attachment
11-12
Describe the structure of the vertebrae
- Costotransverse joint – Between the tubercle of the rib, and the transverse costal facet of the corresponding vertebrae.
- Costovertebral joint – Between the head of the rib, superior costal facet of the corresponding vertebrae, and the inferior costal facet of the vertebrae above.
What do Ribs 1-7 attach to?
Ribs 1-7 attach independently to the sternum.
What do Ribs 8 – 10 attach to?
Ribs 8 - 10 attach to the costal cartilages superior to them.
What do Ribs 11 and 12 attach to?
Ribs 11 and 12 do not have an anterior attachment and end in the abdominal musculature. Because of this, they are sometimes called ‘floating ribs
