The Respiratory System Flashcards
What is the function of the respiratory system?
To bring oxygen to the lungs and remove carbon dioxide from lung AND ensure proper cellular function
What does the respiratory system include?
Airways, lungs, and respiratory muscles
What is breathing also known as?
Ventilation.
Define the Respiratory Pump.
Skeletal structures (bones) and soft tissues (muscles) that work together to allow proper respiratory mechanics to occur and help pump blood back to the heart during inspiration.
What are the two phases of breathing?
inspiration (inhaling) and expiration (exhaling)
How many and what are the two forms of inspiratory breathing?
two; normal resting state (quiet) and heavy (deep, forced) breathing
___ breathing uses the primary respiratory muscles
Normal (diaphragm, external intercostals)
___ breathing uses secondary respiratory muscles
Heavy (scalenes, pec minor)
Can expiratory breathing be active and passive? Give Examples
Yes; (normal breathing it is passive because of the relaxation of contracting muscles, pushing air out. Heavy of forced is active because muscles must force air out of thoracic cavity.
What Bones are associated with the respiratory pump?
Sternum, Ribs, and Vertebrae
What muscles are associated with inspiration?
Diaphragm, External Intercostals, Scalenes, Sternocleidomastoid, Pec Minor
What muscles are associated with expiration
Internal intercostals, Abdominals
Can inspiratory breathing be active and passive? Give Examples
no, only active.
What is VO2max?
the highest rate of oxygen transport and utilization achieved at maximal physical exertion
What is the difference between the respiratory system and the respiratory pump?
Pump includes bones, system just includes passageways
