The Respiratory System Flashcards
This system takes the air that we breathe, and provides or gas exchange (which takes place in the capillaries)
What is the respiratory system?
This system, transports blood containing these gases between the lungs and body cells
What is the circulatory system?
The overall exchange of gases between the atmosphere, blood and cells is called this.
What is respiration?
- Pulmonary ventilation (the movement of air in and out of lungs), 2.external respiration, (the exchange of gases between the air sacs of the lungs) and 3. internal respiration (the exchange of gases between systemic blood, capillary, and tissue cells) are three types of this subdivision of the overall exchange of gases between the atmosphere, blood and cells.
What are the three subdivisions of respiration?
The movement of air into an out of the lungs, a rhythmic movement, a rib cage (thorax) involving inspiration and expiration of air between the lungs and the atmosphere
What is pulmonary ventilation?
The exchange of gases between the alveoli/air sacks of the lungs and the pulmonary capillaries of the blood vascular system. This is the exchange between lungs and blood.
What is external respiration?
The exchange of gases between the systemic blood capillaries and the tissue cells
What is internal respiration?
This upper respiratory tract, body part is located in the center of the face, and is the preferred entrance of the respiratory system, and is divided into an internal and external portion
 what is the NOSE
Distortion of the nose is visible, consist of supporting framework of bone, composed of cartilage and is covered with muscle and skin, and is lined with mucus membrane
What is the external portion of the nose.
This is the proper term for nostrils
What are Nares
Located in the anterior aspect of the skull, this portion of the nose lies inferior to the nasal bone and superior to the mouth, is also lined with mucus, and contains Cilia, which traps airborne particles (contains the nasal cavity)
What is the internal portion of the nose?
This part of the nose is found within the internal portion of the nose. It is the vertical partition located between two nasal cavities. It is composed of bone in cartilage, and covered with mucus membrane, and divides the nasal cavity into right and left portions.
What is the nasal septum?
This part of the nasal septum is a superior portion of the nasal septum
What is the perpendicular plate of the
Ethmoid bone.
This is the inferior and posterior portion of the nasal septum
What is the vomer?
This is the interior and remaining part of the nasal septum
What is the septial cartilage?
This cavity of the nose contains the sinuses, the nasal concha, and the posterior nares
What is the nasal cavity?
This air- filled cavity opens into the nasal cavities, and they are all lined with ciliated mucus membrane that are continuous throughout
What is a sinus a.k.a. paranasal sinus
The frontal sinus, the Ethmoidal, sinus maxillary, a.k.a. antrum’s of highMoore and spinal are all these
What are the four paranasal sinuses?
These Three paired turbinate bones can be found within the nasal cavity
What is the superior middle and inferior nasal conchae
This is the opening between the nasal cavity, and the nasopharynx.
What is the posterior nares, a.k.a. internal nares, a.k.a. posterior choanae a.k.a. internal choanae
The 4 functions of this body part include 1. Warms incoming air via nasal concha. 2. Moisten air via the mucus membrane.3. Filters air via Cilia and 4. contains olfactory stimuli.
What are the four functions of the nose?
The nasopharynx, the oropharynx, and the laryngopharynx are the three portions of this body structure.
What is the pharynx?
These tubes connect the middle ear with the nose and nasopharynx in our lines with a mucous membrane. They function to equalize pressure between the pharynx and the middle ear.
What are the eustachian tubes a.k.a. auditory tubes?
This respiratory organ is a short passageway, which connects the laryngopharynx with the trachea is located in the midline of the neck interior to see for C5 and C6, and functions as voice production
What is the larynx
