The Respiration System Flashcards
What is the respiration system?
The collection of oxygen and removal of carbon dioxide
What are the four processes of the respiration system?
pulmonary ventilation/ external respiration/ transport of gases/ internal respiration
Where is the lower respiratory tract?
everything under the trachea
Where does air enter the body?
via the anterior nares in the nostrils.
Where are the anterior nares located?
in the nasal cavity
What do nasal cavity cells have which kill bacteria entering the nose?
Lysozymes (antimicrobial enzymes)
What is the function of nose hairs?
trap pollen to move into buggers/ hairs are coated in mucus
What are the paranasal sinuses connected to?
the nasal cavity
What are paranasal sinuses?
air filled spaces in the skull bones related to nasal cavity
What are the three paranasal sinuses? draw
Frontal, ethmoid, sphenoid
What is the space where air enters the nasal cavity?
The vestibule
What are the nasal cavities subdivided into?
three air passageways,
What are those three air passageways called?
the meatuses
What are the meatuses formed by?
three shelf like projections
What are the meatuses called?
the superior, middle and inferior nasal conchae
What does the region around the superior conchae and upper septum contain?
olfactory receptors- these responsible for our sense of smell
What does the pharynx connect?
the nasal and oral cavity with the larynx
What are the three regions of the pharynx called?
the nasopharynx, the oropharynx and the laryngopharynx
where is the nasopharynx located?
it sits behind the nasal cavity and contains two openings openings that lead to the auditory tubes
