The Reproductive System Flashcards
Penis / pene
an external male sex organ; a reproductive, intromittent organ that also serves as a urinal duct
Glans / glandes
a vascular structure located at the tip of the penis in male mammals or a homologous genital structure of the clitoris in female mammals
Scrotum / escroto
a dual-chambered protubernace of skin and muscle containing the testicles and divided by a septum
Urethra / uretra
a tube that connects the urinary bladder to the genitals for the removal of fluids from the body; travels through the penis, and carries semen as well as urine
Circumcision / circuncisión
the surgical removal of the foreskin (prepuce) from the human penis
Foreskin / prepucio
a double-layered fold of skin and mucous membrane that covers the glans penis and protects the urinary meatus when the penis is not erect
Varicocele / Varicocele
a widening of the veins along the cord that holds up a man’s testicles (spermatic cord)
Ureter / Uréter, el canal por donde desciende la orina de los riñones a la vejiga
tubes made of smooth muscle fibers that propel urine from the kidneys to the urinary bladder
Sperm / esperma
male reproductive cells
Prostate / prostate
is the size of a walnut (in front of the rectum, just below the bladder); makes some of the semen that carries sperm; wraps around the urethra. During orgasm: muscles squeeze the prostate’s fluid into the urethra; sperm (made in the testicles) also go into the urethra during orgasm; semen carries the sperm through the penis during orgasm
Vasectomy / vasectomía
the vas deferens from each testicle is clamped, cut, or otherwise sealed and prevents sperm from mixing with the semen that is ejaculated from the penis; considered a permanent method of birth control; prevents the release of sperm when a man ejaculates
Ejaculation / eyaculación
the ejection of semen from the male reproductory tract, and is usually accompanied by orgasm. It is usually the final stage and natural objective of male sexual stimulation, and an essential component of natural conception
Vagina / Vagina
a muscular tube lined with mucus membranes. Its opening is between the urethra (where urine exits the body) and the anus
Ovary / ovario
an ovum-producing reproductive organ, often found in pairs as part of the vertebrate female reproductive system
Fallopian Tubes / Trompas de Falopio
“oviducts/uterine tubes/salpinges (singular salpinx)” are two very fine tubes lined with ciliated epithelia, leading from the ovaries of female mammals into the uterus, via the utero-tubal junction
Egg / óvulo
the female haploid reproductive cell (gamete) in oogamous organisms; when egg and sperm fuse, a diploid cell (the zygote) is formed, which gradually grows into a new organism
Conception / concepción
the fusion of gametes to initiate the development of a new individual organism; process involves the fusion of an ovum with a sperm, which eventually leads to the development of an embryo
The Pill / píldora anticonceptiva
a birth control method that includes a combination of an estrogen (estradiol) and a progestogen (progestin). When taken by mouth every day, these pills inhibit female fertility
(Intreuterine Device) IUD / dispositivo intrauterino (DIU)
small, “T-shaped” device inserted into the uterus to prevent pregnancy
Condom / condón
a barrier device commonly used during sexual intercourse to reduce the probability of pregnancy and spreading sexually transmitted diseases
Birth Control Patch / Parche anticonceptivo
small patch that sticks to your skin to prevent pregnancy
Implanon Implant / Implanon implante
a birth control (contraceptive) implant for women; a flexible plastic rod about the size of a matchstick that is placed under the skin of the upper arm; releases a low, steady dose of a progestational hormone to thicken cervical mucus and thin the lining of the uterus (endometrium); typically suppresses ovulation as well
LEEP / procedimiento de escisión electroquirúrgica
loop electrosurgical excision procedure (LEEP) uses a thin, low-voltage electrified wire loop to cut out abnormal tissue in the cervix
Progesterone / progesterona
helps prevent changes in the uterus in women who are taking estrogen after menopause; also treats amenorrhea (menstrual periods stop) in women who are still menstruating
