The renal system Flashcards
What are the 4 key roles of the kidney?
Elimination of endo/exogenous compounds
Chemical homeostasis - pH
Volume homeostasis
Endocrine - EPO, renin, 1-25 vit D
What is the role of the lower urinary tract?
Storage of urine, urination and continence
How does the kidney interact with the respiratory system?
Regulation of pH - To correct metabolic disturbances
Regulate RAS
How does the renal system interact with cardiovascular system?
Maintenance of BP and volume
Regulate ion concentrations for cardiac muscle
Hypovolaemic shock adaptation
How does the renal system interact with ANS?
Innervation to the vasculature of the kidneys to control blood flow
Innervation of the bladder and urethra
What are the endocrine functions of the renal system?
RAS - for Na, K and water regulation
Vit D and Ca regulation
Controlled by ADH
Damaged in DM
How does the renal system interact with the GIT?
GIT provides the input to the body.
Kidney creates and equilibrium for loses
hypoalbuminaemia leads to hepatic failure
How does the kidney interact with haematology?
EPO released for erythrocyte production
Ig deposits cause renal disease
How does the renal system interact with musculoskeletal?
Pelvic floor continence and external urethral sphincter
Crush injuries lead to high K release and myoglobin
