What is planning about?
Planning is about the organisation, regulation and control of present and future land use:
Spatial planning includes a creation of strategies -> to address collective concerns around spatial issues and the quality of local and regional environment
-> and the ability to translate these strategies into visions, coherent actions and means for implementation
Why dutch planning history matters?
> Enables a better understanding of how planning works (instruments, language, culture, etc.)
Its virtues and its limits

What is a city?
- starts with permanent settlement
- > continuous food supplies -> growth of population
- > to grow more -> need more tools, knowledge, management skills
- caves -> small villages
