how was the reconquest of granada achieved?
there was a lot of internal violence between the moorish especially between the royal family (moorish infighting)Ferdinand was at the head of a large military with extensive military power meaning that they could strongly besiege fortresses.
in 1485 the catholic monarchs made a dramatic request for more troops- the whole of Castile contributed to the war effort
there was around 50,000 infantry involved in the whole thing.
why was the granada campaign undertaken?
there was an increasing ottoman presence int the east Mediterranean, the castiliian monarchs water to stop any chance of an alliance forming between the ottomans and the moors - could effect there influence over the west and parts of the med
there were obvious financial advantages
there were a lot of opportunities for distributing patronage.
what does the campaign tell us about the rule of the monarchs?
they were set on creating a united spain. this acted as a way to enhance the political strength of the crown.
they were both very religious. they got permission from the pope - isabella was said to be at ferdinand’s side in prayer.
the strength of ferdinands military rule was shown throughout the campaign
how were muslims dealt with up to 1499?
the war was ruthless- 100,000 died or were enslaved
about half of the 400,000 muslims decided to emigrate those who stayed beri were at first allowed to stay behind and continue their own customs
how did the crowns approach change after 1499?
due to the mass emigration of so many moors there was a large amount of land that could be handed out to the grandees or kept by the crown
Arch Bishop Taleveras policy of christian believes was too slow for Cisneros - his intemperance is sunrising as he was criticised for not takling reform more urgently.
in 1499 he began to enforce conversions upon mudejar communities, and persuaded issabella to introduce the inquisition into granada - do to his harsh treatment there was a rebellion in the Alpujarras mountains. cisneros used this as a reason to push forced expulsion of the moors in 1501
what was ferdinand’s view on mudejars?
they played a significant role in the economy, he was aware of the inherent threat as 1/3rd of the population of valencia was muslim.

the idea that different religions can live alongside one another.

there were fears of a revolt - made more real by the proximity of Africa the campaigns that were run were - 1497- Melilla 1505 - Mers 1509 - Oran

religious tensions did begin to rise in velencia towards the end of Ferdinands reign.
