Q

How does the temperature effects the rate of reaction?

A

If it gets too hot, the bonds holding the enzyme together breaks. This changes the shape of the active site so substrates don’t fit anymore. So the enzyme is denatured

Q

How does the pH effects the rate of reaction?

A

If the pH is too high or low, it interferes with the bonds of an enzyme causing the shape to change. This changes the shape of the active site and denatures the enzyme

Q

Is the optimum pH in different enzymes the same?

A

No, it depends on the location of the enzyme. Pepsin is an enzyme found in the stomach for breaking down proteins and its optimum pH is pH2. However, the common optimum pH for enzymes is pH7

Q

How does the concentration of substrate effects the rate of reaction?

A

The higher the concentration, the faster the reaction. This is because an enzyme is more likely to meet up with a substrate molecule and react. However, there is only so much substrate enzymes can cope with so adding more after that will not have an effect on the rate of reaction.
