The quality of life for both workers and peasants suffered as a result of Stalin’s economic policies in the 1930s.’ Flashcards
Economically
NO…benefits were available to workers who hit targets for ex better living conds + state child care… more women to work (martyrs made eg Stakhanovite movement)
peasants allowed own priv food plots to help food prod recover… produced 2/3 of USSRs food by late 1930s… profit
incr collectivisation by 1940 all farms = collectivised
YES… social inequality created bc of rewards for party bureaucrats… around 50,000 sr party officials rewarded w/ better living conds , better food etc than ordinary workers… ind workers better access to pay than Kolkozniks
state requsitioning most prod from collective farms
Socially
YES… cent planning struggled to deal w/ an increasingly complex econ… org at local level= poor… rapidly developing hevy ind but consumer goods suffered
around 6-8 mil died in famine of 1932-34 + another 10 mil died from effects of dekulakisation and deportation
Rapid urbanisation took place w/out incr housing… shanty towns developed on outside of cities vv bad sanitation… 1926 17% pop lived in urban areas by 1930 = 33%
Working conds = super strict… being late to work 3x in a row cld lead to 10 years hard labour
NO… if skilled worker improved opportunity for training + education + wage differentiation from 1931
collective farms oft had health clinics + schools
Politically
YES….collectivisation + 5 year plans had increased urbanisation … much larger pot workforce for industry…
St achieved much greater state control over soc… … espec since in countryside… from 1929 peasants supervised by party officials attached to each kolkhoz and secret police at each motor tractor station … watched complete state auth.
fear in countryside of purges and continued focus on ‘kulaks’
NO…. soc achieved because of st econ policies in the 1930s… by 1941 state ownership achieved over ind… thus ownership by sov ppl
conclusion
did suffer… only very few saw the positives of the econ pols in 1930s… normal people saw bad working conditions… vv strict + overcrowded living conds
collectivisation caused trauma.. nothing cld rlly make positive + famine
whilst had overtaken britain in iron + steel prod, no benefit to ppl… just suffering (same w/ achievement of soc)
