the psychodynamic approach assumptions Flashcards
component 1
name the three assumptions
behaviour can be explained by the tripartite model of personality
behaviour can be explained by the unconscious mind
behaviour is influenced by childhood experiences
what is the id
-biological part of the mind which drives thirst and hunger
-it is present in a newborn infant
-works on the pleasure principle
-influences us to seek out pleasure and gratification
what is the ego
-aims to gratify the ids impulses in line with what is realistically possible
-works on the reality principle
-develops at two years of age
what is the superego
-judges whether actions are right or wrong
-your conscience
- internalised representation of the same sex parent
-violating superegos standards can cause guilt or anxiety
- works on the morality principle
what are some ways to access the unconscious mind
parapraxes (slip of the tongue)
dream analysis
inkblot test
word association
what is a defence mechanism
unconscious methods that the ego uses to mediate between the id and the superego
what are the three defence mechanisms
displacement
projection
repression
what does repression mean
unknowingly placing an unpleasant memory in your unconscious mind
what does displacement mean
redirecting negative feelings onto someone or something else
what does projection mean
putting your own desires and feelings onto something else by playing the victim
explain the assumption that behaviour can be explained by childhood experiences
events in our childhood can influence our adult lives and shape our personality.
traumatic events can be repressed and remain in the unconscious mind.
what are the five stages of psycho sexual development
-oral
-anal
-phallic
-latency
-genital
what is frustration
-child is under satisfied when their needs have not been met
what is overindulgence
-the needs of a child have been more than satisfied which results in the child feeling too comfortable and reluctant to move onto the next stage
