What is Superego?
The Morality Principle. Conscience and Ego-ideal.
Internalisation of Societal rules.
What are the 5 Psycho-sexual stages?
Oral, Anal, Phallic, Latent and Genital.
What is the Oral stage and when does it develop?
Develops around ages of 0-2. The mouth is the focal point of sensation and the way in which the child expresses early sexual energy (eg. through sucking and biting).
What are the 3 defense mechanisms?
Repression, Denial and Displacement.
What is Repression?
Pushing down memories and thoughts that may be deemed as unacceptable/painful. Eg. someone who was abused as a child may have trouble accessing memories of childhood due to unconscious repression.
What is Denial?
Refusal to accept reality. To avoid dealing with associated feelings. Eg. an alcoholic may be in denial that they have a drinking problem despite multiple arrests for being drunk and disorderly.
What is Displacement?
Redirecting of thoughts or feelings. Eg. a child being abused can’t direct their frustration onto the abuser so may direct the abuse onto a sibling or pet.
What is the Anal stage and when does it develop?
Develops around age of 2-3. Children begin potty training.
What is the Phallic stage and when does it develop?
Develops around age of 3-6 . Boys more attached to mother, girls more attached to father.
What is the Latent stage and when does it develop?
Develops around 6- age of puberty. Children interact mostly with same sex peers.
What is the Genital stage and when does it develop?
Puberty age. Children attracted to opposite sex peers.
