Upton Sinclair/ The Jungle
Upton Sinclair exposed corruption in business and government through his writing. He exposed the horrific condition of meat factory in Chicago. The Jungle is refer to the dirty and harse working condition of the meat packing plant.
Muckrakers
They were writers that exposed the government and big business’ issues.
Meat Inspection Act
It prevent adulterated or mislabeled meat and meat product from being sold as food and make sure products are under sanitary condition.
Theodore Roosevelt
He served as a trust buster and passed several reforms including the Pure Food and Drug Act, Meat Inspection Act and Hep Burn Act.
William Talf
William Talf was also a trust buster who served only 1 term. People were disappointed with him because he raised tariffs on imported goods. He also passed the 16th Amendment which allowed fed. Govt. to implement income tax.
Woodrow Wilson
A leader of the progressive movement who work to create a reform.
Pure Food and Drug Act
A ban on foreign and interstate traffic in adulterated or mislabeled food and drug products.
NAACP
Stand for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. The NAACP fought through courts to end segregation and protested against lynching and other racist violence.
Booker T. Washington
Washington was an African American educator. He founded the Tuskegee Institute in Alabama and took charge of educating African Americans.
W.E.B. Du Bois
Du Bois was an African American scholar and activist who was also a founding member of the NAACP. The Organization help end segregation.
Hepburn Act
It gave the Interstate Commerce Commission the power to set maximum railroad rates and extend its jurisdiction.
Tariff
Tariffs are taxes on imported goods.
Tuskegee Institute
A vocational college in Alabama founded by Booker T. Washington. It was mainly used to educate African Americans.
16th Amendment
Allowed the federal government to impose an income tax.
17th Amendment
It required the direct election of senators by popular vote.
18th Amendment
Prohibited the use of alcohol.
19th Amendment
Give women the rights to vote.
Prohibition
It was a ban on the production and sale of alcoholic beverages.
Women’s Suffrage Movement
Woman fought for several years to gain their right to vote and move into the public sphere instead of just being house keeper.
Tenement Act
The government required every apartment to have a bathroom in the central plaza.
Progressive Era
A period of social activism & political reform in the US. The main goal was purification of government through direct-democracy.
Jane Addams
She was one of the most prominent reformers of the Progressive Era and started the Settlement Movement.
Federal Trade Commission
It was introduced by president Woodrow Wilson to stop unfair business practices.
Settlement Houses
It is where volunteered middle class would live with the lower-income neighbors hoping to share knowledge and culture in society.
Ida Tarbell
She was a journalist who exposed the unfair business practices of the Standard Oil Company. As a result, the government prosecuted the company under anti-trust legislature.
Plessy vs. Ferguson
A case involving civil rights with this one leading to segregation during the Progressive Era.
Initiative
Law making reform that enables citizens to propose and pass a law directly without involving the state legislature.
Recall
Voters can remove an elected official before his or her term expires.
Referendum
Law passed by a state legislature is place on the ballot for approval or rejection by the voters.
Direct Primary
Voters hold elections to choose candidates from each party to run for offices in general elections.
Secret Ballot
Each party print ballots in their own color and citizens voted in a private booth and used an official ballot.
Conservation Movement
A political environmental and social movement that seeks to protect natural resources including animal, fungus, and plants species as well as their habitats.
