Q

What method is used in the Haber process?

A
  1. Pass the purified nitrogen and hydrogen over an iron catalyst at about 450^o and about 200 atmospheres (high temperature and pressure).
  2. Some of the hydrogen and nitrogen reacts to form ammonia.
  3. The ammonia produced can break down again into nitrogen and hydrogen.

9
Q

Why does the Haber process occur at a high temperature and pressure?

A

To produce a reasonable yield of ammonia quickly. Even so, only some of the hydrogen and nitrogen react together to form ammonia.

11
Q

What happens when a reversible reaction occurs in a closed system?

A

An equilibrium is achieved when the reactions occur at exactly the same rate in each direction. The relative amounts of all the reacting substances at equilibrium depend on the conditions of the reaction.

16
Q

In gaseous reactions, which reaction does an increase in pressure favour?

A

The reaction that produces the least number of molecules.

17
Q

What determines the optimum conditions in industrial processes?

A

The pressure and temperature that the reaction will happen under, if the reaction is exothermic or endothermic and reaction rates.
