The Process of Life. B4 Flashcards
what 2 things do all cells contain?
DNA and organelles
what form are DNA molecules in?
double helix
what does the cytoplasm do?
chemical reactions take place. production of enzymes and other proteins
what is the cell membrane?
allow chemicals like gases to pass through but prevents other chemicals from entering the cell
what do all plant cells contain?
cell wall, vacuole, chloroplasts
what do the chloroplasts contain?
chlorophyll
what do enzymes do?
they are protein molecules that speed up the rate of chemical reactions
what happens during the ‘lock and key’ model?
a reaction takes place, products are released and the process can start again
what is active site?
it is where the molecule fits into the enzyme
what can, irreversibly, change the shape of the active site?
temperature and altering the pH level
what are the two types of respiration?
aerobic and anaerobic
what is the function of the mitochondria in a cell?
contains the enzymes needed for aerobic respiration
what is the word equation for photosynthesis?
carbon dioxide+ water= light energy/ chlorophyll+ glucose+ oxygen
what is the definition of diffusion?
movement of a substance from high concentration to low concentration
what is osmosis?
movement of water from a dilute solution to a concentrated solution.
