The Process of Investigating Crime Flashcards
Identify suspects involved in the crime
Identification
in these cases a crime has either been (1) reported or detected sometime after it has occurred (usually a year or more) (2) been investigated for at least a year with no suspects leads.
cases involving unsolved murders, sex crimes, and kidnapping. These cases usually go unsolved due to times degrading of the physical evidence, missing witnesses, and general fading of memory among all parties involved.
Cold cases
offenders have fled the crime scene and victims may or may not be present, but the scene still contains fresh or “smoking gun evidence’’ that can be used later to establish a suspects or victims identity and perhaps whereabouts.
This type of evidence may include eyewitness accounts, and physical evidence. Depending on the strength and quantity of evidence discovered during the preliminary and (perhaps) follow-up investigations, this case most likely will be solved if it involves a crime of violence, but is less likely to be solved in property crimes
warm cases
these are cases in which offenders or victims are still at or very near the crime scene when the investigative process begins. these cases are usually solved by arresting the suspect at or around the crime scene vicinity.
Crimes that involve violent victimization (e.g aggravated assaults, bank robberies, and murders), are highly visible, and occur in a public setting.
Hot cases
begins with duties and observations of the first responder to the crime scene, and may continue with the work of additional investigators and uniformed officers dispatched to the scene
stage 2: the preliminary investigation

Association
