the process and site of glycolysis Flashcards
what stage of respiration does glycolysis occur?
the first stage
where does glycolysis occur?
cytoplasm
describe the first stage of glycolysis
starts with a glucose (6C) molecule
1. glucose is phosphorylated- one molecule of ATP is hydrolyzed and the released phosphate group is added to glucose to form glucose-6-phosphate.
2. glucose-6-phosphate undergoes isomerization (molecule is rearranged) to form fructose-1-phosphate
3. another molecule of ATP is hydrolysed and the phosphate is added to create hexose 1,6- bisphosphate with one phosphate at carbon 1 and one phosphate at carbon 6
describe the second stage of glycolysis
hexose 1,6- bisphosphate splits into two 3C triose phosphate molecules each have a phosphate group
describe the third stage of glycolysis
oxidation of TP:
dehydrogenase enzymes, aided by coenzyme NAD, remove hydrogen ions from TP
2 TP is converted into 2 intermediate compounds this produces 2ATP and 2NADH
intermediate compounds convert into pyruvate which produces 2ATP
what is the overall yield from glycolysis?
2ATP molecules
2NADH molecules
2 pyruvate molecules
