What is the present progressive?
The present progressive is only used to show that the action of the verb is in progress, currently occurring.
For example,
- Pancho is studying (right now).*
- My sister is arguing with her BFF (right now).*
How do I form the present progressive?
To form the present progressive you need to use two verbs:
1) estar > it indicates the tense (present)
2) a second verb >in the present participle, indicates what the action is
estar + verb 2 in the present participle
What are the conjugations for
the present participle?
- ar ending verbs = -ando
- er ending verbs = -iendo
- ir ending verbs = -iendo
What is the present progressive
of hablar?
As you know, hablar is an -ar ending verb; thus, for the present progressive of hablar you need the following:
estar + hablar
1) conjugate estar in the present tense
estoy, estás, está, estamos, están
2) remove the -ar infinitive from hablar and insert -ando = hablando
3) combine them: estoy hablando, estás hablando, está hablando, estamos hablando, están hablando
( I am speaking, you are speaking, he is speaking…)
What is the present progressive of estudiar?
estar + estudiar
yo estoy estudiando
tú estás estudiando
usted, él, ella está estudiando
nosotros, nosotras estamos estudiando
ustedes, ellos, ellas están estudiando
( I am studying, you are studying….)
What is the present progressive of -er ending verbs, like beber?
estar + beber
(drop the -er and add the present participle -iendo)
estoy bebiendo
estás bebiendo
está bebiendo
estamos bebiendo
están bebiendo
(I am drinking, you are drinking, he is drinking…)
How about irregular present participle conjugations?
Verb leer has an irregular present participle = yendo
estar + leer
estoy leyendo

What is the difference between the
present tense and the present progressive?
I.- The Present Tense:
a) to express facts:
* The weather* is cold today.
b) for general actions that are true in the present time period:
* Mary goes to school.*
II.- The present progressive
a) to express what someone is doing right now:
* Pancho is studying.*
b) to express that something is happening at this moment:
* It is raining hail.*
