A boy steals a boat. He feels guilt and imagines how God will punish him
Personification - ‘The voice of mountain-echoes’
this personification suggests guilt.
Oxymoron
‘troubled pleasure’ is an oxymoron gives a sense of foreboding.
‘led by her’
‘her’ is nature personified. She comforts him. She is his friend.
Emphasis - Craggy
The word ‘craggy’ emphasises how unfriendly the mountain is.
Metaphor
‘She was an elfin pinnance’ the metaphor of a fairy boat makes it seem magical and mystical. He is still not afraid.
‘hung a darkness’ implies it is solid and suffocating him.
Simile
‘heavily through the water like a swan’ this is a simile saying it is graceful and beautiful like a swan. He is confident.
VOLTA
‘When’ volta changes the tone. No longer excited now scared.
Repetition - ‘Craggy’
‘Craggy’ is repeated to emphasis the threat

Repetition of HUGE emphasis the threat and the speakers young age.
