What was the political situation like during this time ?`

A

First settlers wanted a godly society / they had strict control

1084 an unpopular Dominion of England replaced the old chartered GOVT , The Glorious Revolution 1688 including the removal of James II added unease as it was feared the new charter would remove MASS’s independence .

What was King William’s charter ?

A

The Charter altered salems way of life :

Puritans must conform to English law and allow religious toleration
Voting eligibility must be based on home ownership not religion
All officials to be appointed by the Crown/Governor could block laws

What was the Indian Threat ?

A

The first Indian war devastated Towns across MASS - 1/10 of all fighting age males died + colonial defences weakened

2nd Indian war coincided with the 9 years war . In the winter 1061-92 - many raids were barbaric - Indians seen as heathens preventing godly society

What was the religious situation during this time ?

A

Pilgrims = Puritans who wanted Godly state / Royal charter allowed MASS to form a puritan church

Puritans stopped Charles II from setting up CoE , James II + Sir Edmund Andros faced difficulty forcing CoE to puritans ( P’s thought he was a catholic sympathiser )

Preachers like Samuel Parris thought the church was under siege . Cotton Mather wrote about the dangers of Witches

Cotton Mather 1689 created “Memorable providences relating to witchcrafts and possessions”

A

The navigation acts reduced the amount of money and resources flowing into MASS as resources were diverted to England
