Little Crow’s War: 1861
Who: Little Crow + Sioux
Why: Failed crops + U.S didn’t provide resources as promised
What: Raided warehouses, killed white Americans
Consequences: 38 natives were executed + they were moved to crow creek - Smaller so many died
Sand Creek Massacre: 1864
Who: Black Kettle + General Chivington
Why : Dog soldiers didn’t agree with the terms
What: Dog soldiers raided areas so Chivington killed surrendering natives. Black Kettle escaped.
Consequences: Chivington was condemned
This was a consequence of the Fort Wise Treaty
Red Cloud’s War : 1866 - 1868
Who: Red Cloud + Fetterman
Why: Gold prospectors travelled along the Bozeman Trail which broke the 1st Fort Laramie Treaty
What: Red Cloud declared war when the U.S Government attempted to build more forts despite negotiations - 80 men killed in Fetterman’s Trap
Consequences: 2nd Fort Laramie Treaty Signed
The Battle of Little Big Horn: 1876 (the 100th anniversary of the U.S.A independence)
Who: Crazy Horse, Sitting Bull, Sioux + Custer
Why: Gold on Dakota Black Hills, other generals were killed + Custer wanted one final victory
What: Some Sioux leave reservation and warned to return in 60 days, $6 million for black hills - declined, Custer charges in with 300 men - flanked and killed. Sioux triumph.
Consequences: Forced assimilation + white Americans want revenge on natives.
