The Physical Geography of the UK Flashcards
Climate
The average weather conditions over a long period of time, usually years
Erosion
The removal of parts of the lands surface. It is caused by rivers, wind, water and ice
Geology
The study of rocks
Glacier
A huge sheet of slowly moving ice in the mountains formed by compacted snow
Igneous Rock
Rocks are made from extreme heat, they can be made inside a volcano. (E.g. granite) or from cooled down lava, outside the volcano (e.g. basalt)
Metamorphic Rock
Rocks that have changed their rock type over time, from sedimentary or igneous to metamorphic. This happens because of heat and pressure. (E.g. marble and slate)
Mountain
A rise in the Earth’s surface that is naturally occurring – over 300m
Relief
The height and shape of the land
Sedimentary Rock
Rocks formed from sediment that settles at the bottom of a lake, or the sea. It is formed from smaller pieces of rock and dead plants and animals. (E.g. sandstone and limestone)
Soil
A combination of broken down rock, minerals and natural materials (e.g. dead plants) mixed together by worms
Weathering
The slow break down of rocks on the Earth’s surface. It is caused by weather conditions such as rain or changes in temperature and sometimes plants and animals
