The Phonatory Pathway Flashcards
What are the three functions of the larynx?
Respiratory
Protective
Phonation
What is the name of the area between the vocal cords?
Rima Glottidis
What happens to the vocal folds during forced inspiration?
They abduct to allow the passage of air
< >
What muscle can be used to open the rima glottidis?
Posterior cricoarytenoid muscle
< >
What are the mechanisms of the protective function of the larynx?
Glottic closure
Cough reflex
This firmly closes the rima glottidis
What muscle can be used to close the rima glottidis?
Lateral cricothyroid muscle
> <
The arytenoid muscle can then further draw the cartilage together
What is the function of the pharynx in phonation?
Increases vocal resonance
What is the subglottal pressure threshold?
Contraction of the inspiratory muscles helps to build subglottic pressure; once a specific threshold is reached the air crosses the vocal cords causing vibration.
What do the different movements of the vocal cords translate to in sound?
Tension = increased pitch Relaxation = decreased pitch Adduction = quieter Abduction = louder
What nerve innervates the intrinsic muscle of the larynx?
Inferior laryngeal branch of the vagus nerve
What are the two groups of laryngeal muscles?
Thyroarytenoid muscles - relaxes vocal ligaments
Cricothyroid muscles - tenses vocal ligaments
What is the innervation of the mucosa above the laryngeal folds?
Internal laryngeal nerve
What is the innervation of the mucosa below the laryngeal folds?
Inferior laryngeal nerve
What nerve supplies all the intrinsic muscles apart from the cricothyroid?
Inferior laryngeal nerve
What is the course of the vagus nerve?
Passes through the jugular foramen
Gives off superior laryngeal nerve
Descends through the neck within the carotid sheath
Gives off recurrent laryngeal nerve
