Joseph Buquet was found hanging in the third floor cellar.
- They will perform Faust at the Opera House. They will receive two special guests, The Comte of Chagny (Phillipe) and his brother the Vicomte of Chagny (Raoul).
- Since La Carlotta (the lead singer) is sick, Christine Daee replaced her in the leading role (Margarita).
- Christine’s performance was a success and after her performance she fainted on the stage.
- Raoul came backstage to help her but she rejected his help. She demands to be alone in her dressing-room.
- Raoul waited until everybody left and went to Christine’s dressing room.
- Raoul heard through the door that Christine was talking with a man.
- Raoul waited outside until Christine left her room and he entered but no one was inside.
- When he was leaving the Opera House, he saw some workmen carrying Joseph Buquet’s dead body.
Chapter 2
- The new directors received a letter signed by the Opera Ghost.
- In this letter the Opera Ghost remembers the directors about all his demands.
- The new directors thought that the letter was a joke of the old directors.
- The next day they received another letter from the Opera Ghost in which he remembers them about his salary of 20,000 francs per month.
- They also receive a letter of the old directors saying that they must not sell the Box Five because it will have consequences. They told a story in which a person called Isidore Saack once came to the Opera House with his family in the Box Five. The Opera Ghost got mad and broke his leg.
- They got scared and called the box-keeper (Madame Giry).
- They asked Madame Giry if she knew something about Box Five and she said that it was exclusively for the Opera Ghost. She has talked to him.
- She said that the Opera Ghost always asks for a footstool for his lady, this means that he always comes with a woman.
- She said that the Opera Ghost refers to her as Madame Jules (Jules, was her husband’s name).
- She also said that sometime the Opera Ghost tip her and that in occasions they forget a fan in the box, so she keeps it and put it again the box so they can take it.
Chapter 4
- In the Opera House there’s a farewell ceremony for M. Debienne and M. Poligny because they are retiring.
- La Sorelli was about to say a speech when suddenly someone saw the Opera Ghost and yelled, interrupting La Sorelli.
- The old directors show the new directors a memorandum-book which they must follow.
- In this book, there were some strange clauses in which some asked for a salary of 20,000 francs per month and that Box Five is exclusively for the Opera Ghost.
- The new directors ask the old ones if they have seen the Opera Ghost before, but they haven’t.
