The person of Jesus Christ Flashcards
Jesus did think he was divine
Yes:
-John 10:30 ‘I and the Father are one’
-his knowledge that he was going to be betrayed and die
-His miracles
-John 14:9-11 ‘“Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father,”
-He demonstrates divine authority by forgiving sins
Explain Kenosis
Kenosis - Christian belief that Jesus ‘self-emptied’ himself of some divine attributes when he became human (incarnation)
However this does not mean that he was not divine, he was, but rather it suggests that he voluntarily chose not to express some of his divine powers
Was Jesus just a wisdom teacher ?
It is clear that Jesus certainly was a profound wisdom teacher e.g. the sermon on the mount, however he was more than this. He was the son of God, the messiah, whose mission went far beyond other wisdom teachers; he saved humanity from sins and died for us, he is the savior of the world in Christian beliefs. His resurrection and ability to perform miracles also distinguishes him from other wisdom teachers.
Jesus was more than a political liberator
-he was not just about politics, at the very least, Jesus was a religious liberator as well
-he liberated humans first and foremost - he freed outcasts from their bondage and he saved people from sins through his forgiveness of the world through his death and resurrection.
-A human could not have saved all of humanity from sin - he must be divine - the son of God
Biblical evidence for Jesus being more then a wisdom teacher or more than just a political liberator
John 14:6: Jesus says, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” - highlights his role as a mediator between God and humanity emphasising his spiritual mission over any political agenda
