The Peripheral Nervous System Flashcards
Peripheral nervous system
all the nerves in the body that are found outside of the central nervous system
Somatic Branch
Controls voluntary, conscious movements
Parasympathetic division
controls involuntary activities when there is an emergency (rest or digest)
Autonomic branch
controls involuntary activities not under conscious control (heart rate and digestion)
Axon
Threadlike part of a neuron that transmits neuron impulses to other cells
Dendrite
receives nerve impulses from other neurons
Motor Neuron
carries nerve impulses from the brain and spinal cord to organs, glands, and muscles
Nerve Impulse
electrical transmitted by the nervous system
Neuron
nerve cell
Sensory neuron
carries nerve impulses from the sense organs and internal organs to the brain and spinal cord.
Sympathetic Division
Controls “fight or flight” responses.
