The Periodic table of the Elements Flashcards
What is an element?
An element is a substance made entirely of one type of atom.
What is a mixture?
Two elements joined physically.
What is a molecule?
A formation of atoms which consists of two atoms joined together chemically.
What is a compound?
Two atoms joined chemically.
What happens to metals when they are burned in air?
It creates an oxide.
What happens to non-metals when they are burned in air?
It creates a dioxide.
Write an equation for magnesium burning in air.
Mg + O = MgO
Why are alkali metals stored in oil?
So they don’t react with air.
What happens when a weak alkali metal is put in water?
It sets on fire and whizzes around on top of the water.

Where do you find the Non-Metals?
On the right.
What is the difference between a physical and chemical reaction.
Physical can be reversed, Chemical can’t.
