The Periodic Table And Covalent Bonding Flashcards
What don’t carbon dioxide and water do?
Conduct electricity
What is a vertical column of elements in the Periodic table called?
A group
Why do elements in the same group have similar chemical properties?
Because they have the same number of electrons in their outer shell
What is a horizontal row of elements in the period table called?
A period
Describe the main stages in the development of the classification of elements
Dobereiner - linked elements that had similar properties and found they have groups of three elements
Newlands - arranged the elements by increasing atomic weight
Mendeleev - refined Newlands’ ideas by putting all the known data for each element onto cards which he arranged in groups and periods in weight order based on their properties
How do non-metals combine together?
By sharing electrons in pairs and this is called covalent bonding
Describe carbon dioxide and water
Simple molecules with weak intermolecular forces between molecules
Explain, in terms of structure and bonding, some of the physical properties of carbon dioxide and water
- low melting points
- don’t conduct electricity
Explain how further evidence confirmed Mendeleev’s ideas about the Periodic Table
- confirmation of his predictions about unknown elements
- how investigations on atomic structure agreed with his ideas
What does the period to which the element belongs corresponds to?
The number of shells of electrons it has
What is ionic bonding?
Metals and non-metals combine by transferring electrons
Recall that there are two types of bonding
- ionic bonding between metals and non-metals
- covalent bonding between non-metals
