Q

What were the letters s,p,d and f first used to describe?

A

They were words used to describe the lines that appeared in the spectrum of light the elements gave out. For this to have happened the elements would have been heated which results in excited electrons to fall back from one energy level to a lower one (omitting light energy at different wavelengths as they do so).

16
Q

Why are the transition metals the most useful metals?

A

Because they are very unreactive metals

17
Q

When lanthanides are in their compound what type of ion do they form?

A

+3 ions

18
Q

Which two actinides are the only two which occur naturally?

A

Thorium and Uranium

19
Q

What is unique about actinides?

A

They are radioactive metals

20
Q

What are periods?

A

Horizontal rows of elements on the periodic table
