The periodic table Flashcards

Sketch a simplified version of the periodic table including the s-,p-,d- and f-block areas
What is a metalliod?
An element that has a combination of metallic an non-metallic properties (located next to the stepped line on the periodic table)
What were the letters s,p,d and f first used to describe?
They were words used to describe the lines that appeared in the spectrum of light the elements gave out. For this to have happened the elements would have been heated which results in excited electrons to fall back from one energy level to a lower one (omitting light energy at different wavelengths as they do so).
What word did s stand for?
Sharp
What word did p stand for?
Principal
What word did d stand for?
Diffuse
What word did f stand for?
Fine
What is a group?
A vertical column of elements
What do elements in the same group form?
A chemical family
What is unique about a chemical family?
They share similar properties Same number of electrons in their outer main level
Describe the reactivity of metals going down the group
The reactivity of metals increases as you move down the group
Describe the reactivity of non-metals going down the group
The reactivity of non-metals decreases going down the group
Where in the periodic table are the most useful metas found?
The transition metals
