The Periodic Table Flashcards
1
Q
Period
A
- Horizontal rows, give the principle quantum number
2
Q
Group
A
- Vertical column
- Gives the e- configuration of the valence
- Groups have similar chemical reactivities
3
Q
Why do elements seek to gain or lose e-?
A
To achieve a stable octet like the noble gases
4
Q
Atomic Radii
A
Decreases left to right
- Effective nuclear charge increases as protons are added
- e- stay in the same shell, so they are puled in tighter
Increases down groups
- filled e- shells increase
- increased distance from nucleus
5
Q
Ionization Energy
A
- Energy required to completly remove an e- (1st, 2nd, etc…)
- More tightly bound the e-, more energy required
- More energy required with each e- removed
- Increases left to right, decreases down (opposite of atomic radius)
6
Q
Electron Affinity
A
- Energy released when an e- is added (how easily an atom accept an e-)
- Positive value when e- is added
