The periodic table Flashcards
1
Q
How are elements arranged in the periodic table?
A
- elements in the same group have the same amount of electrons in their outer shell, giving them similar chemical properties
- elements with similar properties are found in the same group
2
Q
Metals:
A
- elements that react to form positive ions
- majority of elements are metals
- found to the left and the bottom of the periodic table
3
Q
Non-metals
A
- elements that to not form positive ions
- found towards right and top of the periodic table
4
Q
Group 1 - alkali metals:
A
- have a single electron in their outer shell
- react vigorously with water to create an alkaline solution and hydrogen
- react with oxygen to create an oxide
- react with chlordie to form a white precipitate
- the reactivity of the elements increases as you go down the group
5
Q
Group 0 - Noble gases
A
- have 8 electrons in their outer shell, meaning they have full outer shells (except helium)
- unreactive and do not easily form molecules because they are stable (full outer shell)
- the boiling points increases as you go down the group
6
Q
Group 7 - The halogens
A
- seven electrons in their outer shell
- non-metals
- exist as molecules made of pairs of atoms
- react with non-metals to form covalent compounds
- react with metals to form ionic compounds where it carries a -1 charge
- melting and boiling point increase as you go down the group
- reactivity decreases as you go down the group
