Q

What is a halogen?

A

The word halogen means “salt former.” Halogens are either gas or liquid and form salts when they react with metals. Because they are in group 7A (or 17) of the periodic table, they are lacking one elctron from their valence octet and have a charge of -1.

Name the element associated with the following atomic symbol: Xe

What class of elements does this belong to?

What is special about this class of elements?

A

Xenon

The noble gases

The noble gases have a full valence electron shell and fullfil the octect rule, therefore, they are nonreactive.

A

Lead

28
Q

What is electronegativity?

A

A measurement of how tightly a specific element holds onto its outer electrons.

29
Q

What is the most electronegative element?

A

Flourine

30
Q

What is the electronegativity trend on the periodic table?

A

Electronegativity increases going left to right across the periodic table, and increases from bottom to top.

31
Q

How does electronegativity affect the size of an element?

(i.e. its atomic radius?)

A

By definition, the more electronegative an element is, the more tightly it will hold onto its electrons. Since the electron cloud occupies the majority of the volume of an atom, the more electronegative an atom is for a given electronic configuration, the smaller its atomic radius.
