The Periodic Table Flashcards
Where are halogens located on the periodic table?
Group 17 Elements
What are groups on the periodic table?
The vertical columns, numbered left-to-right
What are periods on the periodic table?
The horizontal rows, numbered from top-to-bottom
What is a halogen?
The word halogen means “salt former.” Halogens are either gas or liquid and form salts when they react with metals. Because they are in group 7A (or 17) of the periodic table, they are lacking one elctron from their valence octet and have a charge of -1.
Where are the lanthanides located on the periodic table?
Period 6
Where are alkali metals located on the periodic table?
Where are the noble gases located on the periodic table?
Group 8A (or 18) of the periodic table
Where are the alkaline earth metals located on the periodic table?
Group 2A
What charge do alklali metals have?
+1 charge (usually freely soluble in water) becuase they are in group 1A
Where are the chalcogens located on the periodic table?
Group 6A
Where are the noble metals found on the periodic table?
Where are the actinides foundon the periodic table?

What is electronegativity?
A measurement of how tightly a specific element holds onto its outer electrons.
What is the most electronegative element?
Flourine
What is the electronegativity trend on the periodic table?
Electronegativity increases going left to right across the periodic table, and increases from bottom to top.
How does electronegativity affect the size of an element?
(i.e. its atomic radius?)
By definition, the more electronegative an element is, the more tightly it will hold onto its electrons. Since the electron cloud occupies the majority of the volume of an atom, the more electronegative an atom is for a given electronic configuration, the smaller its atomic radius.
