16
Q

What are alkali metals

A

Very reactive with oxygen and water.
They are stored under oil to prevent them from reacting with air
They are all solid

17
Q

Why are alkali metals stored in oil

A

The prevent them reacting with air

18
Q

What are halogens?

A

Halogens are all non metal elements
They are very reactive
Iodine is a solid, bromine is a liquid and all the rest are gases
Halogens have good antibacterial properties

19
Q

Which Halogen is a solid?

A

Iodine

20
Q

Which halogen is a liquid

A

Bromine

21
Q

What are noble gases

A

They are all unreactive non-metal gases
When electricity passes through them they are bright colours

22
Q

What happens to noble gases when electricity passes through them

A

They create a bright colour

23
Q

What are compounds

A

2 or more elements which are chemically bonded together

24
Q

If a compound end in “ide” how many elements does it have

A

It has 2 elements

25
Q

Why do scientists sometimes draw their chemicals

A

Because they have long names

26
Q

Word equation have 2 sides

A

The left side shows the reactants
The right shows the products

27
Q

When writing a word equation what separates both sides

A

An arrow (pointing right)

28
Q

What is an example of a word equation

A

Carbon + oxygen -> Carbon dioxide

29
Q

Elements and Symbols
What do all elements have in the periodic have?

A

A specific letter (linked to the their name) and an atomic number

30
Q

What is a pure substance

A

A substance which one type of susbstance in it.
For example pure water only has H2O molecules. Sea water has salt, sand and other substance in it.

31
Q

What is a mixture

A

A substance which has 2 or more substances mixed together but they are not chemically joined

32
Q

Who would you separate substances (2 methods)

A

Distillation
Filtration

33
Q

Describe how you would separate substances using filtration

A

Put filter paper in the funnel
Put the funnel in a beaker
Pour in the solution
The solid and liquid will separate

34
Q

When would you use filtration

A

When separating a solid from a liquid

35
Q

Describe distillation

A

Put solution into a beaker
Boil it to the correct temperature
The 2 liquid will separate

36
Q

When would you use distillation

A

To separate 2 liquids

37
Q

What do you call a substance which dissolves in liquid

A

Soluble

38
Q

What do you call a substance which does not dissolve in a liquid

A

Insoluble

39
Q

What is Chromatography?

A

A technique used to separate liquids from a mixture or liquids
E.g find all the colours of dye in a coloured pen

40
Q

What would you use to break up compounds

A

Electricity

41
Q

What is electrolysis

A

When electricity is used to break up compounds
